The Importance of Learning Through Play

In the Early Years, play is far more than just fun — it is one of the most powerful ways children learn about the world around them.

From the very beginning, children are naturally curious. Through play, they explore, experiment and begin to make sense of their environment. Whether it’s building with blocks, engaging in imaginative role-play, exploring outdoors or creating art, these everyday activities play a vital role in shaping a child’s development.

Play supports the development of essential life skills. Children learn to solve problems, communicate their thoughts, build relationships and develop confidence. Through imaginative play, they begin to understand emotions — both their own and those of others — helping to build empathy and social awareness.

Importantly, play also supports brain development. It encourages curiosity, creativity and critical thinking, all of which form the foundation for future learning. When children are given the time and space to play freely, they are not only having fun — they are building the skills they will carry with them throughout their lives.

For childcare professionals, understanding the value of play is essential. Creating opportunities for meaningful, child-led play allows children to develop at their own pace while feeling safe, supported and engaged.

At Gingham Nanny Agency, we place great importance on working with childcare professionals who recognise that play is not separate from learning — it is learning.

Because sometimes, the most important learning happens when children are simply allowed to play.
